Description of Content

The minimum water efficiency level ratings of water fittings (taps and mixers, dual-flush LCFCs, urinal flush valves and waterless urinals) will be raised from 1 tick to 2 ticks for sale and supply in Singapore. Only water fittings with a water efficiency rating of 2 or 3 ticks will be allowed for sale and supply in Singapore

Objectives & Rationale

Background: The mandatory WELS for water fittings was introduced in Singapore on 1 July 2009. Under the scheme, all water fittings must be registered and labelled to provide information on their water efficiency level before they can be sold or supplied in Singapore. Currently, a rating system of 1/2/3 ticks is used to reflect the water efficiency level of taps and mixers, dual-flush LCFCs, urinal flush valves and waterless urinals, and only water fittings with at least 1-tick rating may be sold and supplied in Singapore.

Taps and mixers accounts for a large part of water usage, especially in households. As part of Singapore's efforts to drive water conservation and ensure sustainable water use, the minimum water efficiency level ratings of taps and mixers, dual-flush LCFCs, urinal flush valves and waterless urinals will be raised from 1 tick to 2 ticks. This amendment will come into effect on 1 April 2019.

The new requirement would help moderate water use in this area and also benefit consumers in terms of cost savings from the use of more efficient taps/mixers.

For more details on WELS, please refer to PUB's website at https://www.pub.gov.sg/wels
